CHAPTER 13

Behind the closed doors of my office, April shrieked in disbelief. “So you’re telling me he just flat out interrupted you and asked you out tomorrow night?” Is he, like, a total freak that’s desperate for a woman?”

“No, I just think he doesn’t have a lot of dating experience, but in a good way. He’s willing to say exactly what he means. And he doesn’t seem to have any of those crazy dating rules ingrained in his mind. Which is the only explanation for him asking me out a mere day later. Maybe I’ve just found myself a whole new breed of man that actually says what he does and does what he says.” Even I couldn’t follow that profound train of thought, but it sounded good.

“No, Danielle. Sorry to break it to you, but I think this guy is either a stage four clinger, or else he is a total nerd who has no idea what he’s doing when it comes to dating, which will not serve you well in the end.”

We agreed to disagree since I was absolutely sure this evolved type of guy was perfect for my new persona as I made subtle, yet meaningful, changes in my life. Speaking of which, I needed to get back on task. I had to take care of a few follow-up calls to a skin care rep who was selling Inch Loss Cellulite Cream, which we hoped to feature in our spring lineup in the magazine. This was a company Gwen had referred me to herself, and I wanted to make sure I got their go-ahead to feature their product in one of our spring issues—not to mention the fact I wanted to slather a little bit of this magic cream on my backside to see if it actually worked. Two birds, one stone.

I had no luck getting a hold of the magic cellulite cream company, but I made sure to leave numerous voicemails with their receptionist and send a few e-mails to the distribution rep just to cover all my bases. Since I was skating on thin ice with Gwen, I wanted to make certain I did exactly what she commanded and more.

My e-mail alert suddenly flashed that I had received an e-mail from Gwen wanting to talk to me about an urgent matter in her office at the end of the day. Normally, this type of e-mail wouldn’t even faze me since Gwen thought anything and everything on her agenda was urgent. But ever since she witnessed my unfortunate meltdown at the Expo, I had been on the lookout for something to go wrong, causing me to finally lose my job. I felt like I was working on borrowed time until I could prove to her I was an amazing and completely brand-new person, and I didn’t know just how secure my job was.

I managed to sweat it out for the next few hours, but as I wrapped up my work day, I was utterly convinced this was my last day in my beautiful office overlooking Pike’s Peak.
